My Fundraiser

Hey everyone!

This is my first year participating in the Lock-In For Love with the BC SPCA, and I am so excited to be a part of it! Animal advocacy has always been of huge importance to me, and this year I wanted to participate more personally in giving back to causes that I am passionate about - animals being a big priority.

I've been an animal lover my whole life, and growing up I always wanted to spend any free time I had with my animals. Most of them had been rescued by my family, and I grew up trying to rescue every animal on the planet too - from mice to injured seagulls, and everything in between. I used to come home from school with a different animal weekly, and I think at one point we had over 20 animals. Needless to say, I have a very patient mother, but you could say I got it from my mama because she used to do the same thing to her own mom. Animal love definitely runs deep in my family!

I fully believe in the "adopt, don't shop" lifestyle and currently have two rescue animals of my own - a boxer named Frederick and a cat named Baguette. I adopted Frederick from California in 2013, when he was just 14 weeks old. He was emaciated - weighing only 4 pounds! - and so full of worms that his intestine was blocked and the vet thought we'd have to put him down. But we did surgery to remove 8 inches of the blocked intestine, and the tough little guy fought hard and pulled through to be able to fly back to Vancouver with my sister a few days later. You will never find me without Frederick, he goes everywhere I go - to work, meetings, the barn, and even on trips to Palm Springs and New York! Baguette, my cat, was a stray and spent his days wandering around a restaurant called Shelter in Tofino where I met him while on vacation in 2015. He jumped onto my lap and wouldn't leave me alone, so I wrapped him up in a blanket and he fell asleep on my lap. The restaurant confirmed he didn't belong to anyone, so a kind lady from the cat rescue in Tofino helped me get him into a kennel, and sent him down to Vancouver on a seaplane to meet me. He now spends nearly every night sleeping on my shoulder or above my head.

I also have two horses, Callaghan and Josephine, and spend most of my spare time with them. I've had Josephine for two years and Cal since last fall, and I can't imagine my life without them. For me, it's very important to give them a happy life full of love, care and attention. The barn is the place where I go to decompress, as I am very fortunate to have a passion that includes such selfless beings.  All my animals create a space for me to recharge and fill up with love. Horses are such special, sensitive animals and give so much to their riders, which is why I wanted to fundraise specifically for the BC SPCA's horse care. They rescue 75 horses per year on average, and each horse costs $25 a day to take care of, plus additional costs for ongoing veterinary and farrier care. I'd love to help increase the quality of life for these horses that come from bad situations, so please help me reach my goal if you can!
